A great song from Bruce Cockburn's 1996 release 'The Charity of Night'. Similar to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Jackson Browne. For more information, visit www.truenorthrecords.com.
My father’s song at the end of his life…hauntingly beautiful.
A masterpiece of lamentation by a masterful singer-songwriter.
For me this song is a deep yearning about living life boldly right on the edge of Eternity - so close that you can sense and even smell the atmosphere of what lies just beyond (the disappointments, limitations and tragedies) of the here and now. It is an awsome song composed by someone who's been right out there and experienced it sufficiently to communicate it. One of my all time favourite songs ever that never gets old. Thanks Bruce.
PACING THE CAGE
Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it's pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you've lived too long
Days drip slowly on the page
You catch yourself
Pacing the cage
I've proven who I am so many times
The magnetic strip's worn thin
And each time I was someone else
And every one was taken in
Hours chatter in high places
Stir up eddies in the dust of rage
Set me to pacing the cage
I never knew what you all wanted
So I gave you everything
All that I could pillage
All the spells that I could sing
It's as if the thing were written
In the constitution of the age
Sooner or later you'll wind up
Pacing the cage
Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can't see what's round the bend
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land
For the coming of the outbound stage
Pacing the cage
Pacing the cage
Thanks for this, definetely on a best playlist ever.
still as awesome as he always was ten + high 5s Bruce in 2020
I miss seeing him live.
I love this song. And I think the song title would be a great heavy-metal/punk band name. Really the entire "Charity of Night" record is one of my desert island selections.
All the feels
grat brooding music, I love it...
Yearning for home
There's only one Bruce and it ain't Springsteen.
It's kinda like Jackson Browne and Christopher Cross.
All the sheep....and there 24 hour lament ,cheer or torment..... PACING THE CAGE .....did you choose the direction that is YOU ?
